Dolphin Watching

Across the last decade, the West coast of Kalpitiya has emerged to become a destination for sighting dolphins and whales. The pods of dolphin could be seen in-shore off the Kalpitiya Reef that runs north-south parallel to the peninsula, now called as “Dolphin Line’.

Although the Indian Ocean is a vast open space, finding dolphins in Kalpitiya, during the season is not that hard. Most often the boatman will travel around four to six kilometers off the shore and sure enough after a few moment of scanning the horizon dolphins will come into view.

Dolphin pods often follow shoals of tuna so wherever you can see a tuna fisherman, you can generally assume that dolphins are nearby giving chase.

Spinner dolphins are the most common type to be observed off the Kalpitiya shore, a lovely sight when they jumping out of the sea and ‘spinning’.

Whale watching

One of the prime attractions of Kalpitiya tourism trail, whale watching activity came popular around year 2010. Many types of whales can be seen in Kalpitiya and most sightings pass the main Kalpitiya Bar Reef.

These include the largest mammal on the earth, the Blue whale and Minke, Melon-headed, Bryde’s, Killer and Sperm whales. Recently even Orcas have been observed off the coast of Kandakuliya.

Both dolphin and whale watching tours usually starts from Kandakuliya or Alankuda beaches. The best time to watch dolphins and whales is from November to April. The seas are clear and clam, without any choppy water easily making it ideal for spotting mammals.

Fishing in the Sea or Lagoon

Kalpitiya Dutch Fort

The historic Dutch Fort of Kalpitiya is today located within the premises of the Kalpitiya Naval Detachment. This 16th century fort was first established by the Portuguese who installed a very basic fortification at this location coupled with a civilian settlement outside. The Dutch further upgraded this fort by erecting ramparts around it between 1667 and 1676.

The fort is now only a cluster of modest ruins, with large boundary walls, five bastions and a clear church look in the outside. The reason for giving the fort the look of a church from outside was in order to deceive then Kandyan King Keerthi Sri RajasingheII who only gave the Dutch, permission to build a church at this location and not a fort.

There are said to be two secret escape tunnels within the fort, one leading to the adjacent lagoon, and another leading to the nearby Dutch church. The entrance to the land tunnel still exists but nobody had ever ventured further. The high elevation of the Fort enabled the Dutch to control and monitor trade and security movements with ease. The fort was abandoned circa 1796, when the British first came across Kalpitiya.
